Introduction to Sashiko

This workshop is designed to be an introduction to the gentle art of Sashiko stitching. You will learn about the origins of Sashiko, the various styles such as Moyozashi, Hitomezashi and Kugurizashi (threaded sashiko) and how to achieve the even stitches that are an integral part of the technique. You will also be introduced to traditional tools and materials, the most suitable threads and fabrics and those to avoid.

You will make small samples that can be made into a set of coasters or put together into a table runner. Alternatively,  they can be integrated into other projects such as tote bags or (mending) patches for jeans. These samples are also ideal to use when making Komebukuro  bags (Japanese rice bags). A day making these is being offered later this year. Book the komebukuro workshop here.

No previous experience is needed for this workshop. Suitable for all abilities.

What should I bring? A packed lunch (you are welcome to use the kettle/toaster/microwave in the studio kitchen) and your reading glasses!
