Lampshade Workshop Weekender

Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th October 2024

Places available

Home decor in need of a bit of a refresh? Why not try your hand at making your own hand sewn lampshade. In this 2 day workshop, you will be making a medium size classic gathered shade with gathered lining suitable for a table light/side light.

In the two days you will be taught how to:

– prepare the frame for sewing by wrapping with cotton tape

– calculate the amount of fabric needed, including pattern matching if applicable

– pin and hand sew your fabric to the shade frame

– pin and hand sew the lining

– cut and attach the bias trim to the top and bottom. There are two ways of doing this: stitch or stick

If time, you will also learn how to attach other trims such as braid, gimp, tassels etc.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of sewing experience, but you must be able to sew by hand.

NOTE: sewing lampshades by hand can be surprisingly hard on the hands. As such this workshop may not be suitable for those with arthritis or other hand related conditions.

For your lampshade you will need:

1m of fabric. Fabric should be light to medium weight woven fabric. Suitable fabrics include cotton, batik, Ankara, silks (dupion type). Avoid anything too heavy as this is difficult to gather and sew, or too fine and delicate.

50cm lining fabric. Preferably plain, light coloured and very fine as remember light will need to shine through.

Thimble to fit your middle finger. This is essential!

Small sharp pointed scissors

Glass headed pins

Any additional trims you would like

What will be provided:

– lampshade

– sewing needles and thread

– fabric glue

Please also bring a packed lunch.
