Trouser Fitting Masterclass – Weekender

£175.00

Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October

10am to 4pm, both days.

In this two-day course we will show you how to adapt a commercial sewing pattern to fit you perfectly.

Working with the trouser pattern of your choice* (for woven fabrics only, no jeans), you will learn tips and techniques for taking accurate measurements, tissue fitting patterns, making a toile, evaluating fit and making the necessary pattern adjustments.

We will cover how to recognise and make adjustments for your personal body characteristics, which can include (but not limited to): blending between sizes, full tummy and/or curved or flat bottom adjustments, high or low rise alterations, adding or removing darts. You’ll leave class with a finished toile and a corrected pattern so you can make the perfect trousers at home. This masterclass is designed for students who know how to sew, but want to learn how to make trousers that fit their personal body shape. If you have already made a pair of trousers from a pattern but are disappointed with the fit, do bring these along.

*to get the most out of the Masterclass, we recommend choosing a basic trouser pattern that is meant to be well or closer fitting and ideally higher waisted. Very loose fitting or low waisted may hide fitting issues.

  • Measure yourself correctly to select the best size pattern.
  • Tissue-fit pattern to assess for potential fit issues.
  • Identify and recognise your personal body characteristics and understand how these affect and effect fit (of the trouser).
  • Recognise how 2 dimensional alterations (on paper) affect and effect 3 dimensional shape (the garment).
  • Make fit adjustments on a toile and transfer these to your pattern.
  • Make the pattern alterations relevant to personal fit issues, which can include, but are not limited to:
    • Short or long nape to waist; long or short rise
    • Flat or sway backs
    • Flat or curvy bottoms
    • Narrow or flared hips
    • Full tummy
  • Have the confidence to make pattern alterations to other commercial pattern styles.
  • Be able to ‘read’ a sewing pattern.

What materials will I need for the course?
Patterns, paper and calico will all be provided.

Though available in class, it is recommended you bring your own long pins, tape measure, fabric scissors, HB and 2H pencils plus coloured pens/pencils.

Please wear your ‘normal’ underwear (i.e. not control wear) to enable accurate fitting.

Optional: bring along a pair of trousers you have made (and its pattern) that you have been disappointed with in terms of fit. Depending on time, we may be able to discuss specific pattern alterations.
